Day 2

St.George - Thargomindah

After breakfast, and our usual leisurely start to the day, we headed west through more grazing country and found our way to Cunnamulla. This is quite a large town by south western Queensland standards and was a nicely presented place. We couldn't spend a lot of time here if we were to make "Thargo" before nightfall. We endeavoured to off the road before the sun got too low in the sky to set up in the caravan parks or camps. The other reason is that on dusk the kangaroos, who have been lying in the shade all day, are now out on the road side feeding on the fresh, green shoots. This is a dangerous time to be be travelling as a startled kangaroo in the path of your vehicle can do thousands of dollars damage and put an end to your holiday...not to mention the kangaroo.

We did manage to find the "Robber Tree" in Cunnamulla and for the full story on the robber tree, "click" the image below and use your "back" button to return here.

On the road again and you notice the vegetation is starting to change and the trees are becoming fewer, but the birds nests are still there in their hundreds just lining the road. We have it on good authority that these are the fully enclosed nests of the Babbler. The Babbler is a small, communal nesting bird which explains the large nest size.

Road Train signs warn travellers of these large semi trailers used for all manner of transport from livestock to oil & gas.

Just past Lake Bindegolly we cross the Bullo River and roll into Thargomindah for a hot shower and a good nights sleep before we explore this interesting little town.
